What has been your favorite travel moment?
Meeting the family I would be living with in the Kathmandu Valley for the next four months. I was met by all the family members, put through a welcome ceremony and fed my first meal of “Dal Bhat” – Nepalese traditional meal of rice and lentils.
What’s the first thing you do when you land in a new country?
Try the local beer! Every country has a unique brand that becomes a source of national pride. It is a great way to relax after a long flight and try some local flare early in the trip. Cambodia still has the best!
If you could only eat three foods for the rest of your life, what would they be?
- Dal Bhat
- Mo Mos (Dumplings)
- Big Macs
What’s your favorite foreign phrase?
“Jam Jam” is Nepali for ‘let’s go’! Used mainly by Sherpas at the start of a day of trekking.
What’s the strangest experience you’ve ever had while traveling?
7.9 Magnitude earthquake in Nepal in April of 2015. Apart from being terrifying, it was an unbeatable adrenaline rush. Definitely a moment I will not forget.
What’s the single must-must-must-do experience in your sales region?
Trek the Himalayas. There are great hiking trails around the world, but the people of Nepal living in the Himalayas are incredibly friendly, courteous and fun to be around. The views of the world’s highest mountains is breathtaking and being surrounded by friendly Nepalese adds to the experience.
What do you always forget to pack?
What is your favorite thing about traveling?
The people. The number of interesting people you meet on the way through a foreign country is amazing. The mix of local and international friends you make has always been the highlight.
