4 Unforgettable World Festivals You Need to Check Out
Rio, Munich, Edinburgh and Pushkar are spread out all over the world. But while these places certainly have their differences, they also have something in common – they’re home to some of the most unforgettable world festivals you could imagine.
Whether you’re traveling across the globe for the first time or you’re headed back to a country for a local celebration, you’re in for a treat. Here are four of the most incredible festivals you need to attend at some point in your life:
Oktoberfest in Munich
Also known as the world’s largest beer festival, Oktoberfest is a 16- to 18-day long celebration that takes place in Munich, Germany. According to Vistawide, this party attracts over 6 million people every year! The large crowds devour an estimated 200,000 pairs of sausages and 480,000 spit-roasted chickens and then wash them down with 1.5 million gallons of beer. Attendees are asked to dress in dirndls and lederhosen, the traditional apparel of the fest.
The 2017 festival will begin Sept. 16 and last through Oct. 3. Be sure to grab your German attire and prepare your palate in advance. Prost!
Edinburgh Military Tattoo
The Edinburgh Military Tattoo is a large staple in the annual Edinburgh Festival that takes place throughout the month of August. There, you’ll watch British Armed Forces, International Military bands and Commonwealth of over 48 countries take center stage on the esplanade of the Edinburgh Castle to perform a series of military tattoos. If you can’t make it to the festival, you can likely stream it – the tattoo is televised in over 40 countries around the world.
Each year, the festival strives to bring thousands of people together in the form of music and entertainment, and no one sees the tradition breaking any time soon. The 2017 show will take place Aug. 4-26.
Carnival in Rio
The Carnival in Rio de Janeiro isn’t only one of Brazil’s largest events – it’s considered the biggest carnival in the entire world. The celebration begins on the Friday before Lent and wraps up the Saturday after it ends. The streets of Rio fill with samba school parades, live music and performance groups that encourage the crowd to get up and dance through the night and day. The 2017 festival will take place Feb. 24 through March 4 . Book early to get the best tickets!
Pushkar Camel Fair
Known by the locals as Pushkar ka Mela, the Pushkar Camel Fair is an annual five-day fair that showcases camels in Rajathan, India. Each year, the festival sees thousands of visitors and livestock in the form of camels, cows, sheep and goats. Its sole purpose is for men to buy and sell these animals. Beyond trading, pilgrims come to Pushkar Lake to bathe in the holy waters during the full moon. Other highlights of the fest include camel races, craft bazaars and folk music performances. You can attend the Pushkar Camel Fair next year between Oct. 28 and Nov. 4.
